For the first time in American history, transgender baritone Lucia Lucas will take the leading role in a professional opera, moving the marginalized trans community a tiny bit closer towards understanding and acceptance.

Using a high-risk, odd mix of guerrilla marketing and a full frontal assault on archaic social barriers, Lucia Lucas and her mentor, legendary opera composer Tobias Picker, choose Tulsa, a progressive city in conservative Oklahoma, to make history with her performance.

Throughout the angst-riddled run up to their Don Giovanni debut, we look deeply into the artistic process of Ms. Lucas and Mr. Picker. As they consider their work and what it means to be an authentic artist, we see how they challenge the world of opera and stereotypes about the transgender community.

But most importantly, we see how they challenge themselves, considering how our experiences inform the people we want to become.
