Set in Ireland, this controversial film inspired by real events, challenges celibacy and it’s implications for the Catholic Church in the 21st century.

A can of worms is opened within the Irish Catholic Church following two controversial incidents, the suicide of Frank Sweeney (Patrick Lynch), a parish priest and the expulsion of Daniel McLaughlin (Jonathan Forbes), a young trainee priest from a nearby seminary, on the grounds that he was open to the sexual advances of a male colleague.

Daniel returns to the family home where, fighting his own demons in the form of his ex-love Sinead, (Catherine Walker), he is torn between his desire to return to the seminary and become a priest and his yearning to marry the woman he loves. Meanwhile a local journalist, David Foley (Jason Barry), is convinced that Sweeney’s death and Daniel’s expulsion are linked.  Father Mathew Francis (John Lynch) who was Father Sweeney’s lover and himself a former priest, helps to fuel Foley’s suspicions of a cover up in the Church.

Desperate to clear his good name and be re-instated, Daniel agrees to talk to Foley. As the story gathers momentum, the Church closes ranks. Things come to a head in a live television debate about celibacy in the Catholic Church today when finally the truth is revealed.

“Sex, conspiracy and suicide: just another day at church. There are good priests and bad priests, and in Conspiracy of Silence there is no in-between. John Deery’s modest drama is one big, obvious argument against the vow of celibacy for Roman Catholic priests, but it has heart.” The New York Times
